Lancelot Brown (1716-1783), known as 'Capability' Brown, was the most famous and influential landscape gardener of the 18th century. His nickname came from his habit of telling clients that their land had great 'capability' for improvement. He designed over 170 gardens and is credited with characterizing the English country estate style with turf, water features, and tree groupings.
