Workington Hall Parklands, located in Workington, Cumbria, encompasses approximately 106 hectares of historic parkland surrounding the ruins of Workington Hall. The park is divided into two main areas: Curwen Park (formerly Low Park) and the Upper Park. Curwen Park features mature woodlands with a network of paths, a miniature railway, a walled garden (formerly the kitchen garden for Workington Hall), and the historic Cuckoo Arch. The lower park, situated along the River Derwent, offers attractive riverside walks, open parkland with scattered mature trees, and sports pitches. The parklands were designed in the 1780s by landscape architect Thomas White to complement the Georgian remodeling of Workington Hall by architect John Carr. The hall, originally a 14th-century fortified tower house, was the ancestral home of the Curwen family and is notable for sheltering Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1568 during her flight from Scotland. In recent developments, West House, a local charity, has initiated a project to transform the walled garden within Hall Park into a vibrant community hub. The project aims to provide hands-on training opportunities in horticulture, catering, and customer service for individuals with learning disabilities. The restored garden will feature inclusive growing spaces, a café, and a refurbished pottery studio, with completion expected in autumn 2025. Workington Hall Parklands is managed by a partnership including Cumberland Council, Workington Town Council, and the Workington Nature Partnership. The park is open to the public, offering a blend of historical significance and natural beauty for visitors to explore.
