Ickworth Estate, located near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, is a National Trust property renowned for its Italianate gardens and expansive parkland. The estate's centerpiece is the Rotunda, a striking architectural feature surrounded by meticulously designed gardens. Constructed between 1795 and 1829, the house was the vision of Frederick Hervey, the 4th Earl of Bristol and Bishop of Derry, who enlisted Italian architect Antonio Asprucci to design a classical villa in the Suffolk countryside. The estate's gardens are particularly noteworthy, reflecting the Hervey family's deep appreciation for Italian design. The 1st Marquess of Bristol, son of the 4th Earl, completed the Rotunda and subsequently developed the Italianate Garden to complement the architecture. This garden is considered the earliest surviving example of its kind in England. Inspired by the Marquess's Grand Tour of Europe, the Italianate Garden features manicured hedges, towering cypress trees, expansive lawns, and muted shrubs, encapsulating the Mediterranean aesthetic. The design includes corridors of hedges and a raised terrace walk, separating the garden from the surrounding parkland. The garden was designed as pleasure grounds for family and guests, offering pathways for leisurely strolls and spaces for activities like croquet. The Walled Garden, established in 1701, has evolved over the centuries. Initially a pleasure garden, it later served as a working kitchen garden. Today, it provides a serene spot for visitors, with views across the parkland. The garden also features a summerhouse and Mediterranean-style planting, adding a contemporary twist to Ickworth's Italianate theme. A distinctive feature within the Italianate Garden is the Victorian Stumpery, created by the National Trust's garden team. This area showcases uprooted tree stumps from the Second World War era, arranged artistically among ferns to provide a shaded habitat for wildlife, adding a touch of Victorian mystery to the garden. The gardens also include the Temple Garden, featuring a classical summerhouse and Mediterranean-style planting, offering a contemporary interpretation of the Italianate theme. Throughout the gardens, various walks are named after family members, such as Lady Geraldine's Walk, which meanders through carpets of snowdrops and aconites in the spring. These elements reflect the Hervey family's dedication to creating a harmonious blend of architecture and landscape, resulting in a unique and enduring legacy at Ickworth. Today, Ickworth Estate offers a variety of experiences, from exploring the gardens and parkland to visiting the house with its impressive collections, providing visitors with a glimpse into the grandeur of 18th-century Italian-inspired design in the English countryside.
