About Hampstead Cemetery
Hampstead Cemetery, located in West Hampstead, London, is a historic burial ground established in 1876. It spans approximately 15 hectares (37 acres) and is recognized for its significant landscape design. In 2002, the cemetery was designated as a Grade II site on the National Heritage List for England, highlighting its special historic interest. The cemetery was designed by landscape architect Joseph Fyfe Meston, who had previously collaborated with Alexander McKenzie on the Victoria Embankment Gardens. The grounds feature two Gothic-style chapels and an entry lodge constructed from Kentish Rag and Bath stone, all designed by architect Charles Bell. These structures have undergone significant restoration, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, to preserve their historical integrity. Managed by the Islington and Camden Cemetery Service, Hampstead Cemetery remains an active burial site, with over 60,000 interments to date. While new grave spaces are no longer available, the cemetery offers a Garden of Remembrance for the interment of cremated remains. The site is also valued for its contributions to nature conservation and biodiversity, featuring a butterfly wildflower meadow and a variety of mature trees. The cemetery is open to the public daily, with opening hours varying throughout the year. Visitors can access the site via Fortune Green Road, Nw6 1ep.
