Chillingham Castle, located in Northumberland, England, is renowned for its historic gardens and parkland, which are recognized for their special historic interest. The castle's gardens were designed in 1828 by Sir Jeffry Wyatville, a prominent royal designer known for his work at Windsor. These gardens feature formal layouts, serene woodland walks, and the longest herbaceous border in northern England. The walled garden and associated buildings at Chillingham are listed as Grade II on the National Heritage List for England. Constructed in the late 18th to early 19th century, the walled garden is part of the Chillingham estate and lies within the registered park. It is characterized by handmade brick walls in English Garden Wall Bond, with a dressed sandstone south wall, sandstone copings, and ashlar gate piers. The garden is roughly square in plan, divided into two unequal rectangles, and includes greenhouses and ancillary buildings. The surrounding parkland, known as Chillingham Park, has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. The current landscape was largely shaped in the 18th century by John Bailey, the Earl of Tankerville's estate manager. The park is home to the famous herd of wild cattle, which have grazed the land for centuries. The park's ancient trees and pastures provide a unique habitat for various plant and animal species. Visitors to Chillingham Castle can explore the formal gardens, woodland walks, and the historic parkland, all of which offer a glimpse into the estate's storied past and natural beauty.
