About The Castle, Castle Eden
Athelhampton House, located near Dorchester in Dorset, is a distinguished Tudor manor house built in 1485 by Sir William Martyn. The estate is renowned for its Grade I listed gardens, originally designed in the 1890s by architect Francis Inigo Thomas under the commission of then-owner Alfred Cart de Lafontaine. The gardens are structured into several formal 'rooms,' each enclosed by stone walls and featuring unique elements. The Great Court is dominated by twelve monumental yew pyramids surrounding a central pool and fountain, enclosed by yew hedges and stone walls. The Corona is a circular garden enclosed by a scalloped stone wall topped with obelisks, featuring a central pool with a lead vase-shaped fountain. The Private Garden, located adjacent to the east facade of the house, includes a central rectangular pool with apsidal ends, surrounded by perimeter borders and gravel walks. The Lion's Mouth is a small, enclosed garden featuring a semicircular pool backed by an alcove and wall fountain, accessible through a Tudor-gothic arch from the Corona. Additional features include the Lime Walk, the White Garden, the Rose Garden, and the Octagonal Cloister Garden. The gardens are adorned with a variety of plantings that change with the seasons, including tulips, magnolias, roses, clematis, and lilies. The River Piddle flows through the grounds, adding to the picturesque setting.
