About Lumley Castle
Lumley Castle, located in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, is a 14th-century quadrangular castle that has been transformed into a hotel. The surrounding park and gardens are recognized for their historical significance and are listed as Grade II on the National Heritage List for England. The landscape features of Lumley Castle have evolved over centuries, with contributions from notable designers: George London (1701) consulted for garden designs. Sir John Vanbrugh (1721) provided designs for courts and gardens. Stephen Switzer (1729) stayed at Lumley while preparing his work on hydraulics and hydrostatics. Charles Bridgeman (early 18th century) was attributed with extensive landscaping proposals. Thomas White (1768) created a design for the park. The park encompasses various features, including pleasure grounds, parkland, and a walled kitchen garden. The Lumley Park Burn bisects the site, flowing through a narrow, steep-sided wooded valley known as Lumley Park Wood. Notable structures within the grounds include Lumley Park House (dated 1721), a sandstone sundial (dated 1716), and several bridges crossing the Burn. Today, Lumley Castle operates as a hotel, allowing visitors to experience its rich history and the surrounding historic park and gardens.
