Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens, located near the village of Abbotsbury in Dorset, is a renowned 30-acre botanical garden celebrated for its diverse collection of rare and exotic plants from around the world. Established in 1765 by Elizabeth Fox-Strangways, the 1st Countess of Ilchester, the gardens originally served as a kitchen garden for her nearby castle. Over the centuries, the gardens have evolved into a subtropical paradise, benefiting from a unique microclimate created by their sheltered valley location near Chesil Beach. This environment allows the cultivation of plants that typically require greenhouse conditions in the UK. The gardens feature a mix of formal and informal plantings, including notable collections of camellias, magnolias, rhododendrons, and hydrangeas. In 1990, the gardens suffered significant damage due to violent storms, leading to a major restoration project. Many rare specimens were replaced with younger plants, and new exotic species were introduced, enhancing the garden's diversity. Today, Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens offers visitors a unique experience with its Victorian walled garden, woodland walks, and stunning views over the Jurassic Coast.
