About Chantry Park
The park's origins trace back to the 16th century when Edmund Daundy, a local merchant, donated the property to St. Lawrence Church for the purpose of founding a chantry. The current mansion, known as The Chantry, was constructed in the 17th century and underwent significant modifications in the 18th and 19th centuries. A notable feature of Chantry Park is the parterre on the south front of the mansion, designed by William Andrews Nesfield, a prominent Victorian landscape architect. This parterre is a rare surviving example of Nesfield's work. In addition to the mansion and parterre, the park contains several other Grade II listed structures, including the Hadleigh Road Gate Lodge and the Hadleigh Road gates. Today, Chantry Park offers a variety of facilities, such as children's play areas, a dog training area, and public toilets.
