Barnsley House, located in the village of Barnsley near Cirencester in Gloucestershire, England, is renowned for its historic manor house and celebrated gardens. Built around 1697, the house exemplifies classic Cotswold architecture with its local limestone construction, mullioned windows, and stone slate roof. The gardens gained international acclaim through the work of Rosemary Verey, a distinguished garden designer and writer. After moving to Barnsley House in 1951, Verey transformed the 4.5-acre grounds into a horticultural masterpiece, blending traditional English garden styles with formal and contemporary elements. Key features include the Laburnum Walk (a tunnel adorned with golden laburnum flowers, underplanted with purple alliums, creating a striking display in late spring), the Knot Garden (intricately designed box hedges forming geometric patterns, reflecting the influence of historical garden designs), the Potager (an ornamental kitchen garden combining edible plants with aesthetic design, inspired by the gardens at the Château de Villandry in France), and Herbaceous Borders (lush plantings providing seasonal color and texture, showcasing Verey's signature abundant style). In 2003, Barnsley House was converted into a luxury hotel and spa, allowing guests to experience its historic charm alongside modern amenities. The gardens remain a central attraction, with tours and workshops offered to honor Rosemary Verey's legacy.
