Acton Burnell Park and Garden, located in Shropshire, England, is a Grade II registered historic landscape that reflects a rich tapestry of history and architectural evolution. The estate's origins trace back to the 13th century when Robert Burnell, Bishop of Bath and Wells and Lord Chancellor to Edward I, established a deer park on the hill behind his manor house. This medieval parkland laid the foundation for the estate's subsequent developments. In the 18th century, the estate underwent significant transformation under Sir Edward Smythe, who rebuilt Acton Burnell Hall in the 1750s. He also enhanced the surrounding landscape, introducing ornamental features that contributed to the park's aesthetic appeal. Notably, the Sham Castle, a Gothic folly constructed around 1780, stands as a testament to this period's architectural endeavors. Designed by Joseph Bromfield, the Sham Castle served as a music room for the Smythe family and remains a prominent feature within the park. The park's historical significance is further underscored by its association with Acton Burnell Castle, a 13th-century fortified manor house built by Robert Burnell. Although the castle was abandoned by 1420, its remnants continue to contribute to the estate's historical landscape. Today, the Acton Burnell estate is home to Concord College, a private educational institution. Despite modern developments, the park retains its historical character, with features like the Sham Castle and the castle ruins offering insights into its storied past. The estate's designation as a Grade II registered park and garden highlights its importance as a well-preserved example of 19th-century parkland, set within the framework of an earlier medieval deer park.
