About A La Ronde and the Point-in-view
Rousham House and Gardens in Oxfordshire is celebrated as one of the earliest and most influential examples of English landscape design. Initially laid out by Charles Bridgeman in the 1720s, the gardens were transformed by William Kent between 1737 and 1741. Kent's vision introduced a naturalistic style that seamlessly integrated classical elements into the English countryside, marking a departure from formal garden designs. The gardens feature the Praeneste, a seven-arched colonnade inspired by the Temple of Fortuna Primigenia in Palestrina, Italy, along with classical temples, follies, and statues including works by Peter Scheemakers. The walled gardens to the east feature herbaceous borders, a small parterre, a dovecote, and espaliered fruit trees. Rousham remains largely unaltered since Kent's time, offering visitors a glimpse into the pioneering phase of English landscape design.
