Denham Place, located in Denham, Buckinghamshire, is a Grade I listed 17th-century country house surrounded by a Grade II listed 18th-century landscape park. The estate's gardens have undergone significant transformations over the centuries, reflecting changing tastes in landscape design. Originally, the gardens featured elaborate formal layouts inspired by the Palace of Versailles, including a canal and numerous sculptures. In the 1770s, renowned landscape architect Lancelot 'Capability' Brown reimagined the grounds, replacing the formal gardens with a more naturalistic landscape park. This redesign introduced a meadow, orchard, ornamental trees, a formal sunken garden, flowerbeds, a walled garden, and a lake created by diverting the River Misbourne. The walled garden, a notable feature of the estate, was historically used both ornamentally and as a kitchen garden. It is enclosed by the estate's red-brick wall, which stands approximately 10 feet high and extends around 450 meters. A trapezium-shaped pond at the center of the walled garden is a remnant of the 17th-century layout. In the 1930s, a formal sunken garden was constructed north of the house by Lord and Lady Vansittart. This rectangular garden features a stone path aligned with the north front of the house, leading to a yew-backed seat, and is surrounded by clipped box and yew hedges. The estate's boundary wall and coach houses, dating from the 18th century, are also listed structures, contributing to the historical significance of Denham Place.
